everything you need to know about physiotherapy
what is physiotherapy?.
physiotherapy is a holistic approach to restoring movement and function in individuals affected by injury, illness or disability and/or to reduce risk of injury or illness in the future. physiotherapy can be beneficial for individuals of any age, from children to elderly. the main goal of physiotherapy is to listen to your needs and create a personalized treatment plan that involves you in your own care.
benefits of physiotherapy:
- pain management with a reduced need for opioids.
- avoids the need for surgery on certain musculoskeletal injuries.
- helps improve mobility and movement.
- works toward a speedy recovery from an injury or physical trauma.
- aids in fall prevention by improving balance.
- reduces the risk of age-related medical conditions by optimizing physical functioning.
what are signs it’s time to see a physiotherapist?
if you are suffering from:
- musculoskeletal discomfort.
- any sort of pain that interferes with daily activities and sleep.
- restricted mobility and insufficient movement patterns.
- headaches and body tension.
- sharp pain in your heel that affects walking.
- balance issues.
what to expect in a physiotherapy session?
a physiotherapist will conduct a detailed physical evaluation (session of up to 30 minutes) of your health history and assess your movement, flexibility, muscle & joint motion, and performance. the results of the consultation will help a physiotherapist provide an individualized treatment plan including a clinical diagnosis and prognosis. treatment plans will also include you setting short-term and long-term goals with your physiotherapist. a physiotherapist will perform the required treatment (20 to 40 minute sessions) and will follow up with self-conducted exercise recommendations to continue treatment at home.
